  1. Motivation is critical in a child's education and in life itself. As a future educator, it is important to learn positive and effective ways of motivation for your students in order to keep their interest in school and learning new things and being successful.

Learning about the three theories of motivation; psychological need, situational state, and cognitions and beliefs were very benefiting because it provided "what initiates, sustains, and terminates behavior in achievement situations" (Meece, pg. 381). I particularly believe in the motivation as a psychological need theory, and have had previous knowledge about this topic in an Educational Psychology course that I took a couple semesters ago. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is one theory that has been stressed as an importance of a student's success.

Achievement goals are two goals that are quite familiar in the Special Education field, with IEPs mastery and performance goals are necessary. It is important to remember that motivation is necessary for children, even adults, it provides them with the need to achieve something in order to gain success. Motivation helps to drive a person to achieve a goal.

  2. Katie, i agree with you. It is critical and it may also make a positive impact on the student. You as a teacher should know ways to motivate students, mainly to be intrinsically motivated. Most students are extrinsically motivated and it is difficult to push them over.

Self efficacy is how people expect to perform on a given task. It is a very powerful tool to see how well the student does. It is a good way to assess the student in terms of confidence and see how well they do.

I agree with Tiffany that often teachers tend to give feedback to students that are not very intelligent. I have been in internships where they just say "Nice job," "Great Work" and "Try Harder," which is ridiculous because it is not giving any feedback about how they can improve. Giving positive feedback and critical feedback is important for students to understand and accept so as a teacher you should be aware of how your students will take it.

  3. Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial Development is one that I agree with and it was interesting to find out about it. I have always believed that children need a safe and secure environment in order to develop a sense of trust with the teacher(Meece, page 397). If this type of environment is provided, then the students will be motivated to learn and participate in activities. I have been in some internships where the teacher did not provide a very good atmosphere for the students and this led to bad behavior and low participation. On the other side of the coin, I feel it is also very important for the parent s to provide the same kind of environment at home. "Children's social and emotional development begins with early attachment relations. Children need secure attachments with parents who are warm, responsive, and caringl.(Meece, page397)"

I agree with Meece when she states that, "As children progress in school there is more anxiety about grades and evaluation"(Page 398).
I have always thought that if schools went on a pass fail system, then the stress of getting good grades would go away. The motivation would be higher because students would not have to worry about getting that A. This is very unlikely to happen, however I believe it would make life easier for the students and the teachers and the motivation to succeed would be higher.

  4. I also agree with Tiffany that teachers tend to give feedback that does not benefit the student. I see this a lot in the music class setting. When a section is singing a line well the conductor usually says good job or that's right. I think they should say something like, I liked how you brought out the phrase of the line, or I liked your tone in measure twelve. Just saying things like good job does not motivate the students to continue on. If you want your students to come back the next day you need to encourage them and give them feedback that they can use efficiently.

  5. I agree with Nick that if you give them effective feedback and you encourage them then they will want to be in your classroom. I have a student in my internship who comes in 3rd period. He always comes in and complains to go to the nurse. For the first week i just observed him and from this week being the second week i started working with him and letting him know that i am there for you. I encourage him and ask him what he can do to do better which makes him feel like i care. Plus i mention that you are my friend which makes him feel wanted. So it is important to encourage the students and give them productive feedback

Motivation is a big subject when it comes to teaching. I have interned in a few classrooms and one thing I learned is every child is very different in how they are motivated. As a teacher we have to learn how each student gets motivated to help us to get them to learn and enjoy it. Motivation is a huge part of teaching. You have to know how to motivate your students to be a good teacher. Everyone of your student will need motivation at one point during the year.
In chapter 6 I enjoyed how it talked about intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is when someone is motivated from internally. For example, curiosity, interest, and enjoyment are intrinsic motivations. I think this is the best form of motivation because it is what that person is interested in and wants to learn, they are doing it for themselves. Extrinsic motivation is motivation from external things. Some examples of extrinsic motivation are a reward, high grade, or a means to an end. The person wants to do the activity to get it over with or for someone else; they are not really getting anything out of it. They use to think that we would use on or the other for motivation. Now research has shown that we use or both to motivate us.

  7. Kelly- I agree, motivation is crucial when it comes to teaching, and it is important that you understand that each child is very different in how they are motivated. You have to be flexible and patient, taking the time to see how each child becomes motivated. You also have to keep in mind to motivate your students in a positive manner, rather than rewarding them with tangible items because they will become accustomed to being rewarded every time that they do something correct. I also found Chapter 6 interesting, especially learning about the different kinds of motivation. I find myself as an intrinsic motivated person; wanting to be successful or complete something in order to make myself happy and because I want to learn or do something for myself :)

In response to NickPullin, I agree with you on the Erikson’s theory. I also believe that a student needs to feel safe in the classroom to learn. A student needs to feel safe have a nutritional diet and efficient amount of sleep. This is where the parents come in, the student needs a good environment at school and home to learn the most. I also agree with that the atmosphere can effect student behavior and motivation the learn. My last internship the atmosphere of the classroom was very structured but comfortable, the student were very well behaved and would been engaged and wanted to do the school work. I was also in a internship last year where the students didn’t listen to the teacher and would not do the work. The classroom was empty and didn’t even look like a classroom just an empty room.

I completely agree with Katie and I enjoyed her connections to special education. I believe that motivation is how people achieve and become succesful in whatever they may be doing. Like Katie says as a future teachers it is essential to know the types of motivation and how to motivate your students in your class. As educators we may have students who do not have support or the confidence to want to do anything in school and I think this is where teachers can come in to help student see their intrinsic talents and motivations to make some kind of connection with school. I believe teaching students how to intrinsically motivate themselves is a gift and skill that will only benefit them in their life.

Motivation is a quality that should be instilled to every child's life. As a future educator, I feel that it is even more important to know how to positively and effectively motivate your students in and outside the classroom. A classroom full of unmotivated students, would lead to a classroom of unsuccessful students.
As a future teachers, I think that we all need to realize that there is not much that we can do about a student's environment at home, but we can provide a safe and sucure environment while at school, which usually motivates a student to learn and particiapte in school activities.
Two important things that I learned from this weeks readings and lectures, was the section about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. How a student is motivated to accomplish things varies from student to student. I personally prefer intrinsic motivation over extrinsic. According to the book, intrinsic motivation is the desire to do something just for the sake of it. So you are motivated with in or internaly. It arises from internal sources such as: curiosity, intrest, enjoyment. Extrinsic motivation is when a person is motivated from an external source. A student motivated in this way, is doing it to get a reward, earn a high grade, etc. While both forms of motivation are extremley effective, I don't believe that there should be an immediate reward for every task that is preformed.
