Response to Celeste
I was surprised to hear this about the head start program. I personally have never heard this about students in head start leveling off to the same level as their peers. Although, up to this point I have never really paid attention to things like this either so that may be why. As a parent though I would think that your child does not have to reach a plateau. If you care enough about your child to get them into a head start program so that they will be one step in front it would seem that once it was over you would continue to work with your child to make sure that they maintained that advantage over time. If the child is not nurtured and the education is just passed of to the in-school educators however it is not to hard to imagine that they would eventually fall into line with their peers because they are learning the same materials as those who did not attend a head start program.
